CIPR stands for : Canadian Insurance Participant Registry: This number will follow through your career. is a unique identifier assigned to individuals registered in the Canadian Insurance Participant Registry (CIPR). Your CIPR number serves as a unique identifier that streamlines your communication with insurance regulators across Canada. When you interact with any provincial or territorial insurance regulator, you use your CIPR number to identify yourself. This allows regulators to quickly access your profile, licensing status, exam results, and continuing education records, regardless of which jurisdiction you are dealing with.

This exam covers a variety of insurance topics you’ll need to know in order to become a successful insurance broker. While there’s a lot more to learn on the job or to upgrade your license, the stuff you’ll learn for the exam will cover the basics.

You will be a tested on a variety of topics including: how insurance works, contract law, government regulations, risk management, property insurance (personal and commercial), bonds, legal liability, legal liability insurance, farm, marine & aviation insurance, accident and sickness/travel insurance, and automobile insurance

The exam is 100 questions multiple choice and you need a 70% to achieve a passing grade on the exam. They give you 2 hours to write it.

Roughly 60% of the exam is focused on Technical Skills and Risk Management, 20% on Ethics and Professionalism, and 20% on Industry Knowledge.

With Technical Skills & Risk Management, they make up 60% of the exam and therefore 60 questions. Here is an approximate breakdown:

  • 25 Property Questions
  • 5 Liability Questions
  • 12 Automobile Questions
  • 1 Travel
  • 2 Accident & Sickness
  • 15 Risk Management

Once you’re certified, you will sign up for the exam through the AIC Licensing Portal. The AIC has published an exam registration FAQ with answers to all of your common questions.
